Activity No. 1

LEARN ABOUT GRECIAN CONVERSATIONAL MAXIMS.

Objectives:

  •  To be able to identify about Grecian Conversational Maxims.

  • To be able to express the maxims in our personal lives

  • To be able to apply the lessons learned from the maxims

Material:

Activity A: Talk for a Minute

This public speaking activity can be used to develop speech fluency in a classroom setting.This will help in building vocabulary words in a short period of time.

A speaker has 60 seconds to talk about a maxim taken from the Speech of Barack Obama in NORTH CAROLINA PRIMARY NIGHT RALEIGH , NC MAY 6,2008.

1.    It’s possible to overcome the politics of division and distraction.
2.    A president and a party that can lead us toward a brighter future.
3.    We intend to march forward
4.    United by a common vision of this country.
5.    No matter how much money you start with or where you come from or who your parents are, opportunity is yours if you’re willing to reach for it and work for it.

Activity B: Identifying the type of Maxims

Maxims in one of Barack Obama's speeches (North Carolina Primary Night N.C, May 6,2008) are presented below.The student should be able to identify the type of maxim it belongs to, based on the following sentences.

Type of Maxim

  • Maxim of Quantity - where one tries to be as informative as one possibly can, and gives as much information as is needed and no more.

  • Maxim of Quality - where one tried to be truthful and does not give information that is false or that is not supported by evidence

  • Maxim of Relation - where one tried to be relevant and say things that are pertinent to the discussion

  • Maxim of Manner - when one tries to be as clear, as brief and as orderly as one can in what one says, and where one avoids obscurity and ambiguity. 

1.    It’s possible to overcome the politics of division and distraction.
2.    A president and a party that can lead us toward a brighter future.
3.    We intend to march forward
4.    United by a common vision of this country.
5.    No matter how much money you start with or where you come from or who your parents are, opportunity is yours if you’re willing to reach for it and work for it.
6.    People will embrace the need for change. 
7.    The stakes are too high and the challenges are too  great.
8.    Desire to no longer be defined by our own differences.
9.    While we may have different stories, we hold common  hopes.
10.    Justice can be won against the greatest of odds: hope can find its way back.

Activity C : Rhetorical Analysis

Based on your answer from activity B, present to the class your argument why you think it is under maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of manner or maxim of relation.
